The tip of the elevator blade is introduced in the root bifurcation and the tooth is removed by elevation using the buccal cortical plate as fulcrum.

• Cryer elevator Used for removing root stumps of mandibular molars.
• Uses lever, wedge and wheel & axle principal.
• When one root is removed & the other left behind.
• When both roots present but one is fractured at a lower level than other or when furcation is intact.
• It is a straight elevator.
• It has a triangular blade.
• Working tip is angulated with one convex and another flat surface.

• The triangle shaped elevator is most useful when a broken root remains in the tooth socket and the adjacent socket is empty.
• In experts hands they can be used in the maxilla to luxate maxillary teeth or roots

Root elevators are instruments designed to loosen or remove dental roots, root fragments or teeth. Handle is made from Non-Magnet stainless steel (life time rust prevention material) while tip is made from solid and hardened stainless steel last longer.

Choice of Elevators:

The selection from wide range of elevation instruments based on the following factors:

• Remaining Tooth Structure.
• Space Available
• Availability and Position of Solid Fulcrum.
• Direction of the required Movement.

Indication for Use:

• Reflect Mucoperiosteal membrane.
• Luxate, remove teeth which cannot be engaged by forceps.
• Remove carious or fractured roots.
• Loosen teeth prior to application of forceps.
• Split teeth which have grooves cut into them.
• Remove intra radicular bone.

Elevation of Teeth.

Wedge Elevator between tooth and bone at neck of tooth and rotate handle with slight twisting, quarter-turn movement.

Observe for Tooth movement.

Do not use excessive force to avoid

• Crown Fracture.
• Loosen Adjacent Teeth.

As Tooth loosens, move elevator more into bone towards the root end.
